In Canada, the combustion of transportation fuels (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and fuel oil) accounts for about 28% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To meet Canada’s net-zero commitments, these fuels — and potentially the vehicles they serve — will need to be replaced with zero-emission energy carriers and vehicles, with significant implications for oil-producing Alberta.
Following from Dr. David Layzell’s Hydrogen 101 webinar in March, this presentation begins with a high-level assessment of the net-zero solutions for Canada’s transportation sector, with a focus on the role that hydrogen could play. A case study follows for the transition to net-zero of Alberta’s heavy duty road freight sector.
